Pacific Alpheid Shrimp [Promyllantor pacificus]
Description
Promyllantor pacificus, or the Pacific Alpheid Shrimp, is a species native to the Pacific Ocean. This species is relatively larger than its Atlantic and Caribbean counterparts, reaching a length of up to 3 cm. It is characterized by its bright red coloration with white spots. This burrowing species is often found in association with gobiid fishes in sandy or muddy habitats of shallow coastal waters. It maintains a symbiotic relationship with these fishes, where the shrimp digs and maintains a burrow used by both, while the fish provides defense against predators.
