Trough Shells [Mactra]

Trough Shells
Description

Mactra is a genus of saltwater clams, marine bivalve molluscs in the family Mactridae. These clams have a triangular or heart-shaped shell, often large and robust, with a characteristic deep ligamental pit. They inhabit sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow to moderately deep waters, where they filter feed. The genus is known for its symmetrical shells and a distinctive gape at the posterior end, allowing the extension of the siphons which are used for feeding and respiration.
