Thorecta [Thorecta]
Description
Thorecta is a genus of marine sponges that include species with a variety of shapes, from massive and globular to flat and encrusting. These sponges are characterized by their spiny surface texture, which is the result of projecting spicules. Thorecta species have a firm, yet somewhat compressible texture and are found in a range of colors. They are present in diverse marine habitats, often in deeper waters than many other sponges within the Thorectidae family.
