Sun Corals [Tubastraea]
Description
Tubastraea is a genus of azooxanthellate corals that do not rely on sunlight for nourishment, which allows them to inhabit shaded vertical surfaces and overhangs, or deeper waters. Known for their bright yellow or orange tubular polyps, they are often called sun corals or sunflower corals. Unlike most corals, Tubastraea species do not contribute to reef building but can colonize hard substrates, including shipwrecks and man-made structures.
