Spinycrown Footballfish [Spiniphryne]
Description
Spiniphryne, or Spinycrown Footballfish, is a genus within the Himantolophidae family, characterized by the presence of spiny projections on the head and body, resembling a crown. These deep-sea anglerfish are adapted to life in the abyssal zones of the ocean, using their bioluminescent lure to attract prey in the absence of light. The spiny projections are thought to play a role in defense or may be used to stimulate prey interest toward their luminescent lure. Spiniphryne species are found in deep waters worldwide, where they live solitary lives, hunting small fish and crustaceans.
