Small Giant Clams [Hippopus]

Description
Hippopus is a genus within the family Tridacnidae, known as the small giant clams, though they can still reach considerable sizes. Unlike their Tridacna cousins, Hippopus clams have a more robust and less ornate shell, often with distinct, thickened scutes or plates. They also maintain a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, which aids in their nutrition. Found primarily in the Indo-Pacific region, these clams inhabit shallower reefs and lagoons, contributing to the biodiversity and physical structure of these ecosystems. They face similar threats as the larger giant clams, including overharvesting and habitat loss.
