Short-tailed Shearwaters [Puffinus]
Description
Puffinus comprises a wide variety of species known as the short-tailed shearwaters or muttonbirds. These birds are characterized by their medium size, stout body, and relatively short tail. They have a dark plumage and are exceptional fliers, capable of using the wind to glide over the ocean for hours. Short-tailed Shearwaters are pelagic, feeding on fish, squid, and crustaceans, and breed in large colonies on islands, nesting in burrows.
