Sawtooth Eels [Serrivomer]
Description
Serrivomer is a genus within the family Serrivomeridae, known commonly as the sawtooth eels. These eels are characterized by their elongated bodies, reduced or absent pelvic fins, and a unique dentition that resembles a saw blade, from which they derive their common name. The genus Serrivomer includes deep-sea species that inhabit ocean depths, often below 500 meters. They have a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and temperate oceans. Members of this genus are adapted to life in the aphotic zone, with large mouths and sharp teeth for capturing prey in their dark environment.
