Description
Sarcophyton, commonly known as leather corals or toadstool corals, is a well-known genus of the Alcyoniidae family. These corals are easily recognizable by their smooth, leathery surface and a central stalk that resembles a mushroom or toadstool cap. They are predominantly found in the Indo-Pacific region, forming large, conspicuous colonies that can range from bright yellow to tan in color. Sarcophyton species are significant contributors to the reef ecosystem, providing shelter and habitat for a myriad of marine species.
