Porites [Porites]
Description
Porites is a key genus of stony corals within the family Poritidae, comprising a significant portion of reef structures worldwide, especially in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions. Members of this genus exhibit great diversity in form, including massive, branching, and encrusting morphologies. Porites corals possess small, tightly packed polyps embedded in a hard, calcium carbonate skeleton. These corals are slow-growing but can live for hundreds of years, forming extensive reefs that provide critical habitats for a wide range of marine species.
