Olive Ridley [Lepidochelys]
Description
Within the genus Lepidochelys, the Olive Ridley sea turtle, Lepidochelys olivacea, is recognized for its relatively small size and the olive color of its heart-shaped carapace. It is known for the same mass nesting behavior as Kemp's Ridley, termed 'arribada,' making it one of the most unique reproductive behaviors in the natural world. Olive Ridleys are found in warm waters of the Pacific, Indian Oceans, and the southern Atlantic. These turtles are omnivorous, consuming a variety of prey including jellyfish, algae, snails, and crabs. Despite being the most abundant sea turtle species, Olive Ridleys face threats from egg harvesting, fishing bycatch, and loss of nesting habitat.
