Nebaliella [Nebaliella]
Description
Nebaliella is the type genus of the family Nebaliellidae, encompassing small, shrimp-like marine crustaceans known for their distinct morphology which includes a bivalve carapace that partially encloses the thorax. The genus Nebaliella is characterized by its members' well-developed compound eyes, elongated bodies, and the presence of a carapace which does not fully enclose the last few segments of the thorax, allowing for the flexibility necessary for swimming. These organisms are primarily found in the benthic zone of oceans, where they play a role in the detrital food web, feeding on dead organic matter and small invertebrates. Their unique morphological characteristics and ecological roles make them a significant genus within the marine ecosystems they inhabit.
