Mangrove horseshoe crab [Carcinoscorpius]
Description
Carcinoscorpius is a genus within the family Limulidae, known for the species Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, or the mangrove horseshoe crab. Like other horseshoe crabs, it has a hard carapace and a long, spike-like tail. However, it is distinguished by its preference for mangrove swamps and estuaries, where it plays an essential ecological role. These areas are critical for their breeding and feeding. The mangrove horseshoe crab is also noted for its blue blood, which, similar to Limulus, contains amebocytes used in medical research.
