Lithocardium [Lithocardium]

Description
Lithocardium is a genus within the Petricolidae family, known for its species which possess thick and heavily calcified shells, making them distinct from other genera within the family. These clams are often found in rocky or hard substrates where they use their strong shells as protection against predation and the harsh environment. Lithocardium species are adept at burrowing into substrates with considerable strength, anchoring themselves into place. Their diet primarily consists of plankton, which they filter from the water using their siphons. The genus is distributed in various marine habitats across the world, with a tendency to inhabit deeper and colder waters compared to their relatives.
