Least Brook Lamprey [Tetrapleurodon]
Description
Tetrapleurodon is a lesser-known genus within the family Petromyzontidae, comprising species commonly referred to as the least brook lampreys. These freshwater lampreys are unique in that they are non-parasitic, completing their entire lifecycle in freshwater streams and rivers without migrating to the sea. They are characterized by their small size and the absence of well-developed teeth in adults, which distinguishes them from their parasitic relatives. Tetrapleurodon species are of interest for studies on the evolutionary diversification of feeding strategies within lampreys.
