Lace Corals [Plumularia]

Description

Plumularia is a genus within the family Aglaopheniidae, commonly known as Lace Corals due to their delicate, lace-like colony structures. These hydroids are found in a wide range of marine environments, from shallow coastal waters to deep-sea habitats. Plumularia colonies consist of a main stem from which numerous side branches emerge, each bearing feeding polyps. The polyps are equipped with specialized cells called nematocysts for capturing small planktonic prey. The appearance of Plumularia colonies varies, with some resembling fine filigree work.
