Kolga [Kolga]

Description

Kolga is the sole genus within the family Kolgidae, belonging to the order Semaeostomeae of the class Scyphozoa. These jellyfish are characterized by their large, transparent, and often colorless umbrella-shaped bells, which can reach up to 30 cm in diameter. The margin of the bell typically features lappets and tentacles, with the tentacles being relatively long and slender, equipped with nematocysts for capturing prey. Kolga species inhabit cold and temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere. They are notable for their radial canals that extend from the margin towards the center of the bell, which are used for the distribution of nutrients and oxygen. The genus is distinguished by its unique reproductive and digestive structures, with a central stomach leading to radial canals. These jellyfish feed on a variety of small planktonic organisms and small fishes. Despite their delicate appearance, Kolga jellies are efficient predators in their marine ecosystems.
