Flatback [Natator]
Description
Natator is a genus represented solely by the flatback sea turtle, Natator depressus, which is native to the northern coast of Australia. Distinctive for its flat back and the relatively low profile of its olive-green carapace, the flatback sea turtle is unique among sea turtles for its exclusive distribution around Australia's continental shelf. These turtles nest only on Australian beaches, and unlike other sea turtle species, their hatchlings do not have a pelagic (open ocean) phase but stay in coastal waters. Flatback sea turtles primarily feed on jellyfish, soft corals, and other invertebrates. They are considered data deficient by the IUCN, but face threats from habitat destruction and marine pollution.
