Epaulette Sharks [Hemiscyllium]
Description
Hemiscyllium is a genus within the family Hemiscylliidae, known as Epaulette Sharks. Characterized by their distinctive patterning, small size, and the presence of a large black spot behind each pectoral fin (resembling military epaulettes), these sharks inhabit the shallow, tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Australia and New Guinea. Epaulette Sharks are notable for their ability to 'walk' using their fins, allowing them to move across dry reefs and between tidal pools in search of food. Their diet mainly consists of small benthic invertebrates and fish. Their unique adaptations and behavior have made them a subject of interest among scientists and aquarists alike.
