Dromia [Dromia]
Description
Dromia, commonly known as the 'sleepy sponge crabs' or 'dromid crabs,' belong to the family Dromiidae. These crabs are characterized by their globular body, which is covered by a thick, hairy exoskeleton providing camouflage and protection. They are known for their habit of carrying sea sponges or other protective covers over their back, using their specially adapted rear legs. This behavior helps them blend into their surroundings, offering an effective defense against predators. Dromia species are found in various marine environments, from shallow waters to depths exceeding several hundred meters.
