Devil Anglers [Lophius]
Description
Lophius, commonly known as devil anglers or monkfish, comprises species that are widely distributed across the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. These fish are characterized by their large, flat heads and mouths, and their ability to camouflage with the sea floor. They use a modified spine as a lure to attract prey. Lophius species are notable for their angling adaptation, where a fleshy growth from the head acts as bait to draw closer other fish, which they then engulf with their sizable mouths.
