Deepwater Skate [Brochiraja]
Description
Brochiraja is a genus of deepwater skates found primarily in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, particularly around New Zealand. These skates are adapted to life at great depths, often exceeding 800 meters. They are known for their robust bodies, large size, and distinctive patterning, which can include spots, blotches, and sometimes almost reticulated designs. Brochiraja species are poorly understood due to their deepwater habitats, making observations and studies challenging.
