Deep-sea Roly Polies [Natatolana]

Description

Natatolana is a genus of deep-sea isopods within the family Cirolanidae, often referred to as deep-sea roly polies. These creatures inhabit the ocean's depths, living in mud or clay substrates. Natatolana species are characterized by their elongated bodies, which are well-adapted to burrowing. They have a highly developed sense of chemoreception, which they use to detect decaying organic material on which they feed. Despite their deep-sea habitat, they are key players in the benthic community, contributing to the breakdown of organic matter.
