Chilean Bittersweets [Adipicola]

Description
Adipicola belongs to the family Glycymerididae, commonly referred to as Chilean bittersweets. This genus is recognized for species that inhabit the cold waters off the coast of Chile and adjacent South Pacific regions. Adipicola clams are known for their distinctive shell shape, which tends to be more elongated and less rounded than those of their relatives. The shells feature subdued concentric rings and a smooth exterior. Internally, the shell surface shines with a subtle iridescence. Adipicola species are adapted to life in cold, nutrient-rich waters, where they contribute to the marine food web by filter-feeding on microscopic organisms.
