Atlantic slit limpets [Diodora]
Description
Diodora is a genus of sea snails, specifically keyhole limpets, belonging to the family Fissurellidae. These marine molluscs are characterized by their flattened, conical shells with a distinct keyhole or slit-like opening at the top. They inhabit rocky substrates in intertidal to subtidal zones, primarily in the Atlantic Ocean. The shape of the shell serves to facilitate the flow of water over the gill for respiration. Diodora species are often found adhered to rocks or other hard surfaces, using their muscular foot for movement and to clamp down tightly when threatened.
