Alvinella [Alvinella]
Description
Alvinella is a genus of polychaete worms known to inhabit the extremely hot environments of hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. These worms are remarkable for their ability to withstand temperatures that can exceed 80°C (176°F), making them some of the most thermotolerant multicellular organisms known. Alvinella species, such as Alvinella pompejana, are often found in dense colonies on the surfaces of black smoker chimneys, encased in protective tubes made from secreted mucus and sediment. They are characterized by their elongated bodies, distinct segmentation, and the presence of numerous bristles and appendages, which aid in feeding and gas exchange.
