Alitta [Alitta]

Description

Alitta is a genus of marine polychaete worms in the family Nereididae. Members of this genus are characterized by their well-developed parapodia (lateral appendages), which are used for locomotion and, in some species, for swimming. They possess a pair of palps and tentacles that are used for sensing and feeding. Alitta species are often found in sandy or muddy substrates in shallow marine environments where they play a role as detritivores.
