Scaphandrids [Scaphandridae]
Description
The Scaphandridae family, or Scaphandrids, consists of marine gastropods that have a unique, helmet-like shell covering their body. These snails are adapted to a life buried within the sea floor, where they use their foot to dig and their siphon to feed on organic matter filtered from the sediment. Their shell provides protection from predators and the environment while allowing the snail to remain mostly submerged within the substrate. Scaphandrids are found in a variety of marine habitats, from shallow coastal areas to deeper waters.
