Pristigasterids [Pristigasteridae]

Description

Pristigasteridae, or pristigasterids, are a family within the order Clupeiformes, distinguished by their elongated bodies and the absence of a pelvic fin. These fish are commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters, primarily in the Atlantic Ocean. They tend to inhabit both freshwater and marine environments, including estuaries and rivers. Pristigasterids are known for their role in nutrient cycling and as prey for larger fish species. Despite their ecological importance, they are less known compared to their relatives in the Clupeidae and Engraulidae families.
