Phenacolepadidae [Phenacolepadidae]
Description
The Phenacolepadidae family, also known as false limpets, comprises small to medium-sized marine gastropods. These snails resemble limpets due to their conical shell shape, but genetically, they are more closely related to the nerites. They are found in warm seas worldwide, typically living on submerged wood, stones, and in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents or cold seeps. Members of this family are adapted to a sessile lifestyle, with their flattened, cap-shaped shells aiding in protection against predators and environmental conditions. Their feeding habits are primarily grazing on microalgae and bacteria films.
