Northern Sea Nettles [Cyaneidae]
Description
Cyaneidae is a family of large, often colorful, jellyfish found in cooler parts of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Members of this family, such as the lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata), are known for their long, trailing tentacles and potent sting. They are pelagic, living in open water, and their diet primarily consists of zooplankton, small fish, and other jellyfish. The bell of these jellyfish can reach over 2 meters in diameter in the case of the lion's mane, making them one of the largest known species of jellyfish.
