Mud Shrimps [Callianassidae]
Description
Callianassidae, or mud shrimps, are a family of burrowing crustaceans that live in tunnels in the sea floor. They have elongated bodies and are adapted to a life spent mostly underground, filtering or scavenging for food. Mud shrimps are important bioturbators, mixing the sediment layers and influencing the benthic ecosystem structure.
