Lophogastrids [Lophogastridae]
Description
Lophogastridae, or lophogastrids, belong to a closely related order, Lophogastrida, but are often studied together with Mysida due to their similar morphological and ecological characteristics. These crustaceans are distinguished by their large, cylindrical bodies and a carapace that covers only a portion of the thorax. Lophogastrids are found in a variety of marine habitats, from coastal areas to the deep sea, and they feed on small particles and plankton, using their thoracic appendages for filter feeding. Their bioluminescent organs are a key adaptation for communication and attracting prey in the dark ocean depths.
