Guitarfishes [Rhinobatidae]
Description
Rhinobatidae, known as Guitarfishes, is a family that bridges the gap between sharks and rays within the order Rajiformes. Guitarfishes have a body shape that is somewhat intermediate between the typical streamlined form of sharks and the flat, disc-like shape of rays, giving them an appearance reminiscent of a guitar. They have elongated bodies with flattened heads and pectoral fins that are fused to the head, extending along the sides of the body. Guitarfishes are found in temperate and tropical seas worldwide, often in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and river mouths. They feed on a variety of bottom-dwelling organisms. Some species are of commercial importance but are vulnerable to overfishing and habitat destruction, raising conservation concerns.
