Giant limpets [Lepetidae]
Description
Lepetidae, or giant limpets, comprises a family of small to medium-sized deep-sea limpets. Unlike their intertidal relatives, these limpets inhabit cold, deep waters, often associated with hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and whale falls. They have a cap-like shell that can be more globular than that of their shallow-water counterparts. Giant limpets have adapted to a life in extreme environments by feeding on bacteria and detritus, making them important members of deep-sea ecosystems.
