Gharials [Gavialidae]
Description
Gavialidae, the family of Gharials, is known for its distinctive long, narrow snout, which is adapted for catching fish, their primary diet. Gharials are found in the river systems of the Indian Subcontinent. The family is currently represented by a single living species, the Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), which is critically endangered. While they are freshwater species, their habitat in large river systems can lead them to encounter brackish environments near river deltas; however, they are not considered marine crocodilians.
