Cods and Haddocks [Gadidae]

Description

The Gadidae family includes fish that are primarily marine demersal (living near the ocean floor) with a few pelagic and freshwater species. Members of this family are characterized by having three dorsal fins and two anal fins. They have chin barbels and, in many cases, their bodies are elongated. Notable representatives include the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), which has been a significant food fish for centuries, and the haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), both important in commercial fishing industries.
