Capitellids [Capitellidae]

Description

Capitellidae is a family of marine polychaete worms. Members of this family are characterized by their slender, elongated bodies that are divided into a thorax and abdomen, with the thorax segments often having paired bundles of bristles (setae). They are predominantly burrowers and are found in a variety of sediment types, from mud to sand. Capitellids play a significant role in the benthic ecosystem as detritivores, feeding on decomposing organic matter within the sediment. Their burrowing activity helps in the aeration and mixing of the sediment, thus contributing to the benthic environment's health. Due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, capitellid worms are sometimes used as indicators of pollution and habitat quality.
