Beardfishes [Polymixiidae]

Description

The Polymixiidae family, known as beardfishes, comprises a small group of marine fish characterized by their barbels resembling a beard under the jaw. They inhabit deep waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Beardfishes have a distinct appearance with a large head, long dorsal and anal fins, and a body covered in large, ctenoid scales. They are usually found in tropical to temperate waters and live close to the bottom. Despite their intriguing appearance, they are not widely known and have little commercial value.
