Arachnanthus [Arachnactidae]

Description

Arachnactidae, known for the sole genus Arachnanthus, encompasses a unique group of tube-dwelling anemones. Unlike their Cerianthidae relatives, Arachnactidae species are less commonly encountered and have distinct morphological features. These anemones also construct a tube to live in, but they are generally less colorful, often displaying more muted tones. The family is characterized by its members’ ability to retract completely into their protective tubes when threatened, a behavior that is facilitated by their highly muscular structure. Arachnactidae species are found in various marine environments, from shallow waters to deeper oceanic zones, where they anchor themselves in the substrate. Their diet consists mainly of small aquatic organisms, which they catch using their specialized tentacles equipped with cnidocytes (stinging cells). This family represents an evolutionary path that emphasizes adaptation to a benthic lifestyle, with features optimized for survival in sedimentary habitats.
